Shawn Fain wins reelection as United Auto Workers president

United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain has secured a second four-year term following a decisive reelection victory. Fain, who rose to prominence during the 2023 strikes against the ‘Big Three’ automakers, won with over 68% of the vote, defeating five challengers including incumbent Vice President Rich Boyer, who received approximately 13%.

Fain’s reelection was achieved alongside his ‘United UAW’ slate, which is expected to sweep nearly every seat on the union’s International Executive Board. The election took place under the supervision of a court-appointed federal monitor, Neil Barofsky, following previous corruption scandals within the organization.

The victory serves as a mandate for Fain’s combative approach to labor relations as the union prepares for significant upcoming contract negotiations. Key upcoming milestones include negotiations with John Deere, Volvo, and General Dynamics Land Systems in 2027, as well as the expiration of contracts with General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis in May 2028.
