Shawnigan Creek sediment spill threatens Coho salmon
A significant sediment spill occurred in Shawnigan Creek on October 2, 2026, following a water-main strike at an upstream development. The incident released an estimated 50 dump truck loads of soil and silt into the waterway.
The Mill Bay and District Conservation Society reported that the sediment entered a fish trap containing approximately 800 Coho salmon intended for migration assistance. While the exact number of fish killed remains unknown, the event has been described as catastrophic by local conservationists.
The Ministry of Environment and Parks confirmed that the province’s Environmental Emergency Branch is coordinating with the responsible developer. The developer has engaged an environmental consultant, and remediation efforts are currently underway. To assist in clearing the debris, the weir at Shawnigan Lake was opened to increase water flow through the creek.
