Cleveland Browns head coach manages quarterback battle

The Cleveland Browns are currently navigating a preseason quarterback competition between veteran Deshaun Watson and rookie Shedeur Sanders. Head coach Todd Monken has indicated that while the front office manages the roster, the final decision on the starting quarterback rests with him.

Sanders experienced a difficult preseason opener against the Chicago Bears, completing 6 of 11 passes for 79 yards and throwing one interception. Despite the performance, Monken praised Sanders’ improvement in pocket movement and progressions. Conversely, Watson, returning from an Achilles injury, completed 11 of 15 passes for 126 yards in the opener.

Looking ahead to the second preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, Monken noted that the team will hold a joint practice with Buffalo. If the joint session is productive, many established starters may sit out the game against the Bills, potentially leaving Sanders to lead a lineup composed of a mix of starters and reserves.
