Shehzad Poonawalla, the national spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has resigned from all party positions and primary membership. In a formal letter to BJP President Nitin Nabin, Poonawalla cited pressing financial and personal circumstances as primary drivers for his departure, noting his intention to move into the private sector.
Poonawalla revealed that this follows a previous resignation attempt on July 30, which the party leadership had declined, asking him to reconsider. He stated that recent events involving “certain individuals” within the organization reinforced his decision to leave. While stepping away from the party structure, he expressed continued support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP’s core vision.
In subsequent discussions, Poonawalla highlighted the practical difficulties of maintaining a political role without a regular salary, stating, “I need to pay my rent.” He also reflected on his unique position as a young individual from a Pasmanda Muslim background without political lineage, noting that such an opportunity might not have been possible in other political environments.
