Sheik Bashiru Kante reportedly surfaces in Mexico

Questions are mounting regarding the Liberian government’s ability to enforce an arrest warrant for Sheik Bashiru Kante, a central figure in a US$317 million cocaine-trafficking investigation. Reports and social media footage suggest Kante may have arrived in Mexico, though his exact legal status and whether Mexican authorities have been notified remain unconfirmed.

Kante is a key witness and figure in the prosecution’s case against former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor and others accused of involvement in the international trafficking operation. Prosecutors allege Kante acted as an intermediary between Howard-Taylor and Nikola Ivancic, an alleged leader of the network. During preliminary proceedings, Acting Crime Services Commissioner Raphael A. Wilson testified that forensic analysis of Kante’s cellphone revealed communications linking him to the operation.
