Sheikh Ahmad Gumi defends public funding for marriages in Shariah states

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has defended the use of public funds to facilitate marriages in states governed by Shariah law, calling it a “legitimate and responsible component of good governance.” Gumi’s comments follow public debate regarding the Kano State Government’s “Auren Gata” initiative, a mass wedding programme organized by the Kano State Hisbah Board that recently joined 1,500 couples in marriage.

Gumi argued that in societies where prostitution, fornication, adultery, and promiscuity are prohibited by both religious and state laws, the government has a social responsibility to assist citizens. He specifically noted that providing support for young people in dire need of marriage or women facing limited opportunities to find suitable spouses is a valid use of resources to address social conditions created by these legal prohibitions.

The Kano State initiative aims to ease the financial burdens on vulnerable couples and provide economic and household support to help them establish family lives. While supporters believe the programme strengthens family structures and reduces social vices, critics have questioned whether such expenditures should take priority over other pressing state needs.
