Sheikh Hasina announces plan to return to Bangladesh in December

Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced her intention to return to Bangladesh in December. Speaking virtually at an event in Washington, D.C., Hasina stated that she is prepared to face potential arrest, torture, or even death, asserting that returning to her country is her responsibility as a political leader.

Hasina, who has been residing in India since her government fell in August 2024, expressed deep gratitude to the Indian government and its citizens for providing her refuge. She drew parallels to the support India provided her and her family following the 1975 assassination of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

During her address, Hasina accused the current Bangladeshi administration of using criminal legal proceedings to suppress political opponents and the Awami League. She also called for free and inclusive democratic processes in the country. Additionally, she thanked Donald Trump for halting USAID funding, claiming it would prevent resources from being misused. While Hasina has signaled a December return, her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, noted that a specific date has not yet been finalized.
