Sheikh Hasina announces planned return to Bangladesh

Ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced her intention to return to Bangladesh in December. Making the announcement via an audio address to media in New Delhi, Hasina stated she intends to stand with the people of her country.

This development follows her flight from Dhaka on August 5, 2024, amid widespread political unrest. The situation mirrors the 1975 assassination of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding president of Bangladesh, who was killed alongside much of his immediate family during a military coup.

Hasina’s proclamation has complicated bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh. The current government in Dhaka, led by Tarique Rahman, has reacted with outrage. Hasina faces a death sentence in absentia, having been convicted by an International Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity related to the crackdown on anti-government protesters.
