SHEIN Accused of Using Assata Shakur Image Without Permission
Dream Defenders, a Black‑led activist organization, announced on July 19 that SHEIN, the multinational women's apparel retailer, copied a graphic design that honored the late civil‑rights figure Assata Shakur. The artwork was created by designer Fe Worthington for Dream Defenders and was never intended for commercial sale or profit.
The group said the image was taken and used by SHEIN without consent, calling the act an exploitation of a tribute to Shakur, who died in September and would have turned 79. Dream Defenders described the incident as a misuse of a non‑profit’s creative work by a multi‑billion‑dollar corporation.
The organization’s statement highlighted that the graphic was produced solely for activist purposes and had not been mocked up on any merchandise before the alleged appropriation.
