Shein expands in Latin America amid shifting consumer trends
Ultra-fast fashion platforms like Shein and Temu continue to see strong consumer engagement driven by low prices, convenience, and social media trends, despite growing awareness of ethical and environmental concerns. A study published in the Journal of Global Fashion Marketing suggests that while consumers express concern regarding sustainability, these factors often do not dictate purchasing decisions. Instead, affordability and social media validation remain primary drivers.
In Latin America, Shein has accelerated its growth, with its division outside the US and Europe reporting a 22% sales increase in the second quarter. While this expansion puts pressure on local retailers, analysts at XP Investimentos suggest that Brazilian retailers remain well-positioned to compete in terms of price and product variety. Furthermore, Shein’s gradual strategic shift toward higher-value, premium segments may reduce its competitive advantage in the low-cost market over the coming years.
