Shein pop-up store in Montreal draws environmental protests

The fast-fashion retailer Shein has opened a temporary pop-up store on Sainte-Catherine Street West in Montreal, offering customers the chance to try on Fall/Winter trends in person. The four-day event, running from August 27 to 30, features various styles including Retro Remix and Dark Romance, with discounts available for certain purchase thresholds.

However, the opening has drawn protests from the environmental organization Équiterre. Activists stationed a garbage truck in front of the boutique to denounce the company’s business model, labeling it as unsustainable and a symbol of ‘disposable fashion.’ Équiterre is calling on the Canadian federal government to implement barriers against the company to prevent it from selling low-quality products without meeting environmental standards, which they argue creates unfair competition for local businesses.

Additionally, the company faces scrutiny regarding its environmental and social impact. Reports from organizations such as Greenpeace have highlighted the use of prohibited substances like lead in products, while other reports have raised concerns regarding human rights and labor conditions within the company’s supply chain.
