Shein shares plunge following first post-IPO report

Shein, the fast-fashion giant, saw its stock price plunge on the Hong Kong exchange following its first financial report since its September listing. Shares fell as much as 14% in a single session, bringing the company's total decline to approximately 35% since its initial public offering (IPO).

The company reported a significant drop in profitability for the second quarter ending June 30. Adjusted net income fell by approximately 66.6%, dropping to roughly $228 million. While revenue saw a marginal increase of 0.9% to $11.08 billion, profit margins were heavily compressed due to rising operational costs.

Several factors contributed to the downturn. Shein cited increased logistics and shipping costs, influenced by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and rising oil prices. Additionally, the company faced headwinds from new regulatory environments and changes in tariff policies. In the United States, revenue decreased by 6%, while in Europe, revenue fell by nearly 14% following the removal of tax exemptions for low-value packages and the introduction of new import fees.

Founder and Chairman Chris Xu noted that the company expects continued uncertainty due to shifting trade policies and macroeconomic complexities.
