Sheinbaum administration accused of attempting to silence Mexican media

Reports based on a Wall Street Journal column suggest that the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum is working to silence media outlets in Mexico. The analysis claims that the erosion of democratic pluralism in the country began under former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and has continued under the Morena party.

According to the reports, the Morena party has gained control over previously independent institutions, such as the National Electoral Institute (INE) and the Electoral Tribunal. Furthermore, legislative changes, including a law to elect all judges, are cited as factors that have compromised the independence of the Mexican judiciary. The administration is accused of using state power to dismantle protections for individual liberty and the rule of law through measures such as surveillance and economic sanctions.
