Shell Cove e-bike crackdown leaves police officer seriously injured

A police officer sustained a serious leg injury in Shell Cove during a joint operation by the NSW Police Force and Transport for NSW targeting illegal and modified e-bikes. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon on Aquatic Drive when a senior constable was allegedly struck by an e-bike while attempting to stop a rider.

The rider, an 18-year-old man, fled the scene and was later located hiding in Bass Reserve. He has been charged with multiple offenses, including unlicensed riding, dangerous driving, and failing to stop and assist after an accident. The suspect was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in Port Kembla Local Court on October 28.

The broader crackdown across southern Sydney and the Illawarra resulted in the seizure of 22 e-bikes. Authorities reported that several vehicles had been modified to exceed legal speed and power limits, with one e-bike allegedly capable of reaching 50 km/h. During the operation, police issued nine penalty notices and four cautions.
