Shelter charity accused of requesting migrant-related edits to veteran's testimony

The charity Shelter has faced criticism after requesting that a homeless veteran include pro-migrant statements in his personal testimony. The veteran, a former soldier who served in Eastern Europe, provided a detailed account of his experiences with post-traumatic stress disorder, homelessness, and legal disputes with his local council in response to an appeal for stories.

While Shelter initially praised the account, the veteran later received an email suggesting he add language to defend migrants receiving housing. The charity’s communication noted the need to address the tendency of some to “conflate veterans being homeless with migrants ‘getting homes’.” The veteran, speaking anonymously, expressed distress that his personal history was being used to serve a political agenda, stating he had trusted the organization with a deeply personal account that he did not want modified to include political messaging.
