Liaoning high school students exposed by reused needles during TB screening

A medical professional at Kangping County Senior High School in Liaoning Province, China, violated safety protocols by reusing a needle during routine tuberculosis skin tests. Local authorities confirmed that 78 students were affected by the breach of the “one person, one needle” regulation on October 27.

The incident sparked significant concern among parents regarding the potential transmission of blood-borne pathogens, including HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Large groups of parents gathered at the school to demand accountability, leading to a tense situation requiring police presence to maintain order.

Local government officials stated that all 78 affected students have undergone follow-up medical testing, with initial results showing no abnormalities. Authorities have dismissed online rumors claiming that students had already contracted HIV or syphilis, calling such reports unfounded. A special investigation commission has been established to determine how the violation occurred, and officials indicated that those responsible will face disciplinary action.
