Shenzhou‑23 crew conducts experiments aboard China's Tiangong space station

China launched the Shenzhou‑23 crewed spacecraft on 24 May 2024 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, marking a successful mission to the Tiangong space station.

The three‑member crew – astronauts Lai Jiaying (黎家盈), Zhu Yangzhu and Zhang Zhiyuan – have now spent nearly two months aboard Tiangong, carrying out a range of scientific and health‑monitoring activities. Their work includes brain‑computer‑interface tests using EEG and VR equipment, micro‑gravity physics experiments, collection of saliva and surface‑microbe samples, and long‑term kinematic studies with structured‑light 3‑D cameras. Ground researchers will analyse the samples to study protein‑glycan changes, microbial composition and astronaut movement in micro‑gravity.

The mission is highlighted as part of China's broader push in defence and technology, which recent reports link to achievements such as the successful Chang’e‑6 lunar‑sample return, high‑speed rail expansion, and the development of indigenous satellite and computing systems. President Xi Jinping emphasized self‑reliance and innovation as central to the nation's security and economic strength.
