Sheri Herman, a pioneering media executive known for her influential roles in cable and digital television, has died at age 71. She passed away from heart failure on August 6 in Florida.
Herman played a critical role in the evolution of modern entertainment media. During her tenure at E! Entertainment Television, she helped transform the channel from the startup Movietime into a major network, overseeing brand development and marketing as the subscriber base grew from 2 million to 55 million.
Her career included significant contributions to several major networks. At United Cable, she negotiated key carriage agreements, and later, while working with Liberty Media, she helped secure the financial future of the Discovery Channel through strategic output deals. She also facilitated equity investments for QVC.
As president of American Cybercast, Herman was a digital media pioneer, spearheading the launch of early episodic digital shows on the World Wide Web, including the first web soap opera, ‘The Spot’. Jarl Mohn, former president of VH1 and a longtime colleague, described her as a ‘true creative force’ who possessed a ‘relentless thirst for charting new paths forward’.
