Sheriff's offices warn of sophisticated phone and jail bond scams

Law enforcement agencies are warning the public about increasingly sophisticated phone and text scams designed to steal personal and financial information.

In Iowa, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office has identified a specific jail bond scam targeting families of recently arrested individuals. Scammers pose as bondsmen, deputies, or jail staff, often using real inmate information to appear legitimate. They demand immediate payment via gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or payment apps. Officials emphasize that law enforcement will never call to demand bond money over the phone, nor will they send couriers to homes to collect funds.

Similarly, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office in Indiana has issued warnings regarding various methods used to solicit sensitive data. They advise citizens to hang up or delete suspicious messages and to verify any requests by contacting businesses or organizations directly through trusted, official channels.

Victims of these scams are encouraged to report incidents to local law enforcement, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, or the Indiana Attorney General’s Office.
