Sherrard High School cancels remainder of varsity football season
Sherrard High School in Illinois has announced it will cancel the remainder of its 2026 varsity football season following a home game this Friday against Orion. School officials cited a lack of varsity-ready players as the primary reason for the decision.
The team's roster currently consists of 30 players, including only five seniors and eight juniors. The shortage of available athletes was exacerbated by several key players, including starters on the offensive and defensive lines, being unable to play due to mononucleosis.
Principal Alex Johnson described the move as a “tremendously difficult decision,” noting the impact on the community. Head Coach Zach Weigel stated that while the decision is heartbreaking for the five seniors, it is necessary to prevent injury and burnout by not forcing a small group of players to play every position. The school intends to focus on the junior varsity program to rebuild the football program for future seasons.
