Shetland community councils call for energy development moratorium

During an energy convention organized by the Association of Shetland Community Councils (ASCC), representatives from 12 community councils called for a moratorium on energy development. The proposal seeks a pause in development until legislation is updated to better address the concerns of affected communities, focusing on issues such as local control, ownership, supply chains, and ensuring a fair share of benefits.

Shetland MSP Hannah Mary Goodlad and MP Alistair Carmichael declined to back the unified statement in its current form. Both officials expressed a preference for a “Shetland-specific” approach rather than the broader statement drafted by Highland councillor Helen Crawford. Goodlad emphasized her commitment to a “Shetland energy act” to secure local wealth and control, while Carmichael noted the importance of using language that reflects local priorities.

Community council testimonies highlighted various local concerns, including the potential impact of a proposed ammonia plant near Bressay, threats to seabird colonies on the Isle of Noss, and the possible displacement of the fishing industry in Whalsay.
