Shetland energy developments see charter signing and debate over moratorium

Shetland Aerogenerators Ltd has become the first company to sign the Shetland Development Charter, a framework designed to set expectations for investors regarding renewable energy developments in the region. The charter, approved by the Shetland Islands Council, aims to ensure energy transitions are fair, protect the environment, and provide local benefits.

Under the agreement, Shetland Aerogenerators Ltd has committed to measures such as a local electricity discount scheme for residents near the Neshion Energy Park to address fuel poverty. The company also pledged a community ownership offer of at least 5% for the Neshion Energy Park and intends to prioritize the local supply chain to retain economic value within Shetland.

Separately, Shetland MSP Hannah Mary Goodlad has addressed calls for a moratorium on energy developments across Scotland. Responding to concerns from the Association of Shetland Community Councils, Goodlad argued that a blanket moratorium would not grant Shetland control and could lead to costly legal challenges or halt beneficial community-owned projects. Instead, she advocated for devolution and local decision-making to address community concerns regarding the scale and pace of energy development.
