Shetland Islands Council approves plan for undersea tunnels

The Shetland Islands Council has approved an inter-island transport connectivity route map that prioritizes the construction of undersea tunnels to replace existing ferry services. The plan focuses on a tunnel connecting the mainland to Yell as a priority, with a potential completion date of 2034, followed by a connection to Unst. Other potential routes include tunnels for Whalsay and Bressay.

The total cost for a network of four tunnels is estimated at approximately £1.5 billion. To support the project, the Scottish Government has pledged £23 million over the next three years to facilitate pre-construction work. While the funding provides a path forward, officials noted that route options may need revision if affordability constraints are not resolved.

Local residents and officials view the project as a vital alternative to the current ferry system, which serves as a social and economic backbone for the islands but faces challenges due to an aging fleet. Proponents suggest the tunnels could provide more reliable transport for goods and passengers compared to the current reliance on vessels and emergency helicopter services.
