Shi-gang Hot Air Balloon Carnival debuts Mazu-themed balloon in Taichung
The Shi-gang Hot Air Balloon Carnival has commenced in Taichung, Taiwan, running from August 22 to 24 at Tu-niu Sports Park. Now in its sixth year, the event has become a significant local tourism brand for the mountain region.
A highlight of this year's festival is the debut of a Mazu-themed hot air balloon from the Taitung Tiangong Temple. This creates a symbolic “Double Mazu” connection with the local Shi-zhong Temple, intended to bring blessings and prosperity to participants.
Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen attended the opening ceremony alongside cheerleader Lee Da-hye. During the event, Mayor Lu expressed her wishes for citizens to experience good fortune and upward mobility, drawing a comparison to previous festival ambassador Li Yang, who later rose to a ministerial position.
The three-day festival includes hot air balloon rides, evening concerts featuring artists such as 911 and Xiao Huang-chi, fireworks, and light shows. Local authorities are encouraging visitors to explore the surrounding Shiga area, including its Hakka culture and scenic landmarks.
