Shibaura Institute of Technology researchers study flavonoids' effect on the brain
Researchers at the Shibaura Institute of Technology are investigating how plant compounds known as flavonoids, specifically flavanols, may influence the nervous system and mood. While these compounds are typically studied for their antioxidant properties and their effects after entering the bloodstream, scientists are exploring whether sensory contact in the mouth can trigger neurological responses before absorption.
In studies involving mice, the administration of flavanols led to increased activity and improved cognitive performance in distinguishing new objects. This effect appears linked to the activation of the noradrenergic system in the locus coeruleus, a brain region responsible for regulating alertness, attention, and responsiveness.
