Shield AI and GEK TERNA partner for X-BAT production in Greece
American company Shield AI and GEK TERNA have signed a strategic memorandum of understanding in Athens to develop an industrial base and infrastructure for the X-BAT autonomous combat aircraft in Greece.
Under the agreement, Shield AI will maintain responsibility for the X-BAT program, providing autonomy software and mission systems. GEK TERNA will act as the strategic partner in Greece, managing a network of local suppliers—including small and medium-sized enterprises—and operating a local program office. Expected Greek industrial involvement includes component manufacturing and assembly, ground equipment, maintenance, repair, and research collaborations with Greek universities.
The X-BAT is designed as a long-range combat aircraft featuring AI-driven flight and vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities. It is intended to operate from ships, islands, or remote locations without runways. The companies aim to establish Greece as a regional hub for training, logistics, and maintenance for the X-BAT, serving Cyprus, the Balkans, and Southeast Europe. Flight tests for the aircraft are anticipated to begin later in 2026.
