Shield AI receives $150M US Navy boost for X-BAT autonomous fighter

Shield AI has received an additional $150 million from the US Navy to advance the development of X-BAT, an AI-piloted fighter jet capable of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL). Combined with $150 million in private investment from Shield AI and previous funding, the total announced investment for the project has reached $400 million.

The funding is provided through the Defense Exportability Features (DEF) program, a Pentagon initiative designed to help US defense companies develop technology that can be sold to international allies without compromising sensitive US secrets. To support international expansion, Shield AI has entered an agreement with the Greek infrastructure group GEK TERNA to explore manufacturing components, assembling aircraft, and establishing maintenance facilities in Greece, potentially creating a regional hub for southeastern Europe.

The X-BAT is designed to operate from various naval vessels, including destroyers and aircraft carriers, as well as from islands or locations without conventional runways. The aircraft utilizes Shield AI’s Hivemind software, which allows for autonomous flight even in environments where GPS signals or communications are compromised. Flight testing is expected to begin later this year.
