Shifting perceptions of the American Dream amid economic and scientific challenges

The concept of the American Dream is undergoing significant shifts due to economic and political pressures. In the scientific community, a potential “brain drain” is emerging. Recent data indicates that US scientists submitted 32% more applications for jobs abroad in early 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. A Nature poll found that three-quarters of 1,200 surveyed scientists are considering leaving the country, driven by immigration restrictions, funding cuts, and uncertainty regarding research support.

Simultaneously, younger generations, specifically Gen Z, are navigating an affordability crisis and economic stagnation described as the “great postponement.” While traditional milestones like homeownership and marriage are being delayed due to rising costs, many young adults are adapting through side hustles and unconventional life sequences. Despite facing tougher economic circumstances than previous generations, an Urban Institute survey shows that 56% of Gen Z adults expect their personal financial situation to improve within the next year.
