Shifting trends in retirement and career planning
Changing perspectives on retirement are emerging, with a shift toward more flexible approaches to work and financial planning. One growing trend is “micro-retirement,” where individuals take intentional, temporary career breaks lasting from weeks to several months. These breaks are used for travel, personal development, or recovering from burnout, rather than waiting until traditional retirement age. This trend is particularly notable among Gen Z and younger millennials.
In a different approach to financial freedom, some investors are focusing on building portfolios designed to make full-time work optional by age 55. In Australia, because superannuation is generally inaccessible until age 60 or preservation age, such a strategy requires building an investment portfolio outside of superannuation to act as a financial bridge. The goal is often to provide supplemental income that allows for part-time work or personal projects rather than complete cessation of employment.
