Shiga Prefecture faces risks from unmanaged bridges and ground subsidence

Shiga Prefecture is facing significant infrastructure challenges, including approximately 1,900 bridges with unknown managers. These unmanaged structures, often referred to as ‘unauthorized bridges,’ lack regular inspections and repairs. Their aging condition poses a serious risk of collapse during floods, which could exacerbate local damage.

In addition to the bridge issue, Maibara City is dealing with long-term ground subsidence. In the Minamikawa housing complex, multiple sinkholes and depressions in roads and residential plots have been occurring for nearly 20 years, with some reaching depths of approximately 80 centimeters. Local authorities are working to address these safety concerns and identify responsible parties for the unmanaged infrastructure.
