Shigeko Kagawa, Japan’s oldest resident, dies at 115

Shigeko Kagawa, recognized as Japan’s oldest resident, has passed away at the age of 115. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare confirmed her death, noting she resided in Yamatokoriyama, Nara Prefecture.

Born in May 1911, Kagawa was a medical professional who studied at the Women’s Higher Medical School in Osaka. During World War II, she served as a gynecologist in an Osaka hospital. She later managed her family’s clinic, practicing as an obstetrician and gynecologist until her retirement at age 86.

Kagawa gained international attention in 2021 when, at age 109, she participated in the Olympic torch relay for the Tokyo Games. Her family attributed her longevity to a regular lifestyle, consistent sleep patterns, and eating three small meals a day. Kagawa herself often emphasized her sense of freedom and independence.
