Shigeko Kagawa, Japan's oldest resident, dies at 115

Shigeko Kagawa, a resident of Yamatokoriyama in Nara Prefecture, Japan, passed away on August 27 at the age of 115 years and 91 days. Upon her death, she became Japan's oldest person following the passing of a 114-year-old woman in July 2025.

A graduate of Osaka Women's Medical College (now Kansai Medical University) in 1934, Kagawa practiced as an obstetrician and gynecologist in her own clinic until her 80s. She was also recognized for her contributions to treating cholera in Japan.

Kagawa attributed her longevity and lack of chronic illnesses to two main habits: frequent walking and constant mental stimulation. She maintained a disciplined lifestyle, eating three meals a day and remaining active. In 2021, at age 109, she made history as the oldest Olympic torchbearer during the Tokyo Olympics.
