Shigeru Miyamoto to receive Japan's Order of Culture
Nintendo creative fellow Shigeru Miyamoto has been selected to receive the Order of Culture, Japan's most prestigious cultural honor. This marks the first time an individual from the video game industry has been chosen for the distinction, which is awarded by the Emperor to those who have made exceptional contributions to the nation's culture and research.
Miyamoto, the creator of iconic franchises such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Donkey Kong, was named as one of eight recipients for the 2026 edition in the media arts category. The official conferment ceremony is scheduled for November 3, 2026, coinciding with Japan's Culture Day.
During a press conference at Nintendo's Kyoto headquarters, Miyamoto expressed humility regarding the award, stating that he accepts it as a representative of the many professionals and teams he has collaborated with over his nearly 50-year career. He also addressed the rise of generative AI, arguing that while technology can automate labor, human intention and individual design vision remain essential to creating meaningful experiences.
