Shigeru Miyamoto receives Japan's Order of Culture

Nintendo legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto has been named the first video game developer to receive the Order of Culture, Japan's highest honor in the arts and culture sectors. The award, which will be presented by the Emperor on November 3 during Japan's Culture Day, recognizes Miyamoto's profound impact on the industry through iconic franchises such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Donkey Kong.

During a recent press conference, Miyamoto expressed humility regarding the distinction, stating that the honor belongs to the many people who collaborate on game development rather than just himself. He noted that games are the result of collective effort.

Miyamoto also shared insights into game design philosophy and the evolution of the medium. He discussed the importance of interactivity, defining it as the player's engagement in thinking about what happens next. Additionally, he addressed the rise of generative AI, suggesting that while technology evolves, it serves to highlight the value of human creativity and intentional design.
