Shigeru Miyamoto's 1990s Nintendo collaborations reveal Zelda and Mario origins

In a 1999 interview, Capcom producer Yoshiki Okamoto said he pressured Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto by threatening to release a game identical to the original The Legend of Zelda on the Game Boy Color if Nintendo refused a remake. The negotiation resulted in the development of the portable titles Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, while the planned full remake was cancelled. Capcom later partnered again with Nintendo on The Minish Cap for the Game Boy Advance.

Separately, Miyamoto’s early 1980s work on a game originally intended to feature Popeye led to the creation of the character Jumpman, who evolved into Mario. Miyamoto described Mario’s personality and design, noting his iconic moustache and red overalls, and highlighted how the character has been reinvented across more than 200 games, media adaptations, and theme park attractions.
