Shillong hosts major regional badminton and athletics championships

Shillong is hosting two major regional sporting events. The Yonex Sunrise North East Interstate Badminton Championship 2026 has commenced, bringing together over 250 players from across the eight North Eastern states. Organized by the Meghalaya State Badminton Association, the four-day tournament features U-17, U-19, and senior categories in both individual and team formats.

Simultaneously, the Meghalaya State Senior Athletics Championship 2026 has begun at the Sports Authority of India centre. This event marks the return of the championship after an 18-year hiatus. Approximately 267 athletes from 12 districts are competing in 37 track and field disciplines. The competition serves as a talent scouting initiative ahead of the 39th National Games, which Meghalaya is scheduled to host next year.
