Shillong Peak ropeway project faces scrutiny over environmental and consultation concerns

The Meghalaya government is targeting October 2028 for the completion of a ₹151-crore ropeway project at Shillong Peak. The 913-metre system, managed by the Meghalaya Ropeway Development Authority, is intended to improve tourist access to the viewpoint, reduce road pressure, and create over 450 jobs. Funding is expected to come from the New Development Bank and the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North Eastern Region.

However, the project has faced criticism regarding its environmental impact and the adequacy of public engagement. Critics have noted that a 2022 public consultation recorded only 27 attendees, with 80 percent of those respondents expressing concerns about negative impacts on local river quality.

Concerns have also been raised regarding forest clearance, with estimates suggesting that approximately 26,000 square metres will be required for development. Additionally, there are debates regarding the choice of mono-cable technology, which is noted for being the most cost-effective but lacks the redundancy of bi-cable systems.
