Shim Hyung-rae prepares for film comeback with ‘D-War 2’
Comedian and film director Shim Hyung-rae is preparing for a career comeback with the production of ‘D-War 2’. During a recent broadcast of MBN’s ‘Special World’, Shim reflected on his peak years, noting that his advertising income alone was substantial, with individual commercials paying 80 million won each. He estimated that having filmed over 100 commercials, his earnings were equivalent to the cost of over 100 luxury apartments in Apgujeong at the time.
Despite his early success, Shim faced significant financial hardship due to failed film business ventures, eventually declaring personal bankruptcy in 2013 after accumulating 17.9 billion won in debt.
His previous SF monster film, ‘D-War’, has recently seen a resurgence in popularity on global OTT platforms like Netflix, ranking highly in several European countries including France, Germany, and Italy. Leveraging this renewed interest, Shim is accelerating plans for the sequel, ‘D-War 2’, and is scheduled to hold a production presentation this December.
