Shimano launches new SPD-SLR pedal and cleat system
Shimano has unveiled its new SPD-SLR pedal and cleat system, marking the first major shift from its SPD-SL road standard in over two decades. The new ecosystem includes both Dura-Ace (PD-R9300) and Ultegra (PD-R8200) pedal options.
Key technical improvements include a significantly reduced stack height and a lighter cleat design. The new system features a wider catch zone at the front of the pedals and a narrower engagement angle of 10.5 degrees, compared to the previous 15.5 degrees. On the flagship Dura-Ace model, a new axle design utilizing wide bearings is claimed to increase stiffness by 11%.
Notably, the SPD-SLR system is not backward compatible with existing SPD-SL components. Alongside the pedals, Shimano is also releasing updated S-Phyre and Ultegra-level road shoes, featuring revised sizing and last shapes.
