Earthquakes strike Balochistan and Shimla causing panic and one death

Multiple earthquakes were recorded across South Asia on October 17, 2026. In Pakistan, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude between 5.6 and 5.9 struck near Khuzdar in Balochistan. The tremor was shallow, with a depth of approximately 10 to 25 kilometers, causing significant shaking in Khuzdar and surrounding areas. One fatality was reported in the Nal region after a large rock fell from a mountain, striking a resident. While some buildings sustained cracks, no widespread mass casualties were immediately confirmed.

In India, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, in the early hours at 4:36 AM. The tremor, occurring at a depth of 10 kilometers, caused panic among residents, many of whom fled their homes. No major damage or loss of life was reported in the Shimla region. Additionally, tremors were felt in the Ambikapur area of Chhattisgarh and parts of Madhya Pradesh, recorded at a magnitude of 3.5.

Geologists attribute the seismic activity in these regions to the interaction of the Indian, Eurasian, and Arabian tectonic plates, which creates high seismic vulnerability in both Balochistan and the Himalayan belt.
