Shin Tae‑yong Appointed Head Coach of Persija Jakarta
South Korean coach Shin Tae‑yong, former head of the Indonesia national team (2019‑2025), was formally introduced as the new head coach of Persija Jakarta at a press conference in Jakarta International Stadium on 8 June 2026. He signed a three‑season contract, becoming the club’s fourth managerial appointment. Shin said he had received two offers from other Asian clubs but chose Persija because of his emotional ties to Indonesia and familiarity with Jakarta’s football culture.
PSSI chairman Erick Thohir welcomed the hiring, saying it will raise the quality of Indonesia’s Liga 1, which has moved up from 25th to 16th in Asian rankings and aims for a top‑10 finish. Shin’s previous roles include coaching Korean clubs Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma and Ulsan HD and serving as vice‑president of the Korean Football Association after leaving the Indonesian national team.
The appointment is seen as a boost for domestic competition and a foundation for further development of the national teams at all age levels.
