Shincheonji Church Denies Alleged Mass Membership in South Korea's People Power Party

The Shincheonji Church of Jesus issued a statement rejecting claims made by South Korean lawmaker Song Young‑gil that about 110,000 church members joined the People Power Party during its 2021 presidential primary and that the church directed votes toward a specific candidate. The church said it found no objective evidence for either allegation and asserted it did not intervene in the party’s primary. It described the accusations as unfounded and harmful to its reputation, and announced it will pursue civil and criminal action against those spreading the unverified claims. The statement was released by the Frankfurt branch of the Shincheonji Church.

The controversy arose during a televised new‑media debate on 21 July, after media outlets reported the lawmaker’s remarks.
