Shingles and postherpetic neuralgia risks and prevention

Shingles, commonly known as herpes zoster, is increasingly affecting younger populations due to stress and fatigue, which can weaken the immune system. A significant complication is postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a condition where damaged nerve fibers cause persistent, intense pain—described as burning, electric shocks, or crawling sensations—that can last for months or even years.

Medical experts emphasize that the first 72 hours after the onset of symptoms are the golden window for antiviral treatment to reduce the risk of chronic nerve pain. Prevention strategies include maintaining adequate sleep, a balanced diet, stress management, and vaccination, particularly for individuals over 50 or those with compromised immunity.

Treatment options for PHN include anticonvulsants, antidepressants, and pain patches, as standard anti-inflammatory drugs often prove ineffective. Nutritional supplements such as Vitamin B complex and Omega-3 fish oil may also assist in nerve repair and reducing inflammation.
