Shingles vaccination programs expand in Yilan and Japan
Yilan County, Taiwan, is expanding its subsidized shingles vaccination program to include residents aged 80 and older. Following an initial phase targeting specific high-risk groups aged 55 and 65, the second phase will open for appointments on November 2, with vaccinations beginning November 16. The county government aims to reduce the significant medical costs and quality-of-life impacts associated with shingles and postherpetic neuralgia.
In Japan, shingles vaccinations have been integrated into the routine immunization schedule as of April 2025. The program targets specific age groups, including those turning 65, though eligibility and out-of-pocket costs vary by municipality. Two types of vaccines are available: a single-dose live vaccine and a two-dose recombinant vaccine. While the program is categorized as a Type B disease, meaning vaccination is based on individual discretion rather than legal mandate, local governments provide varying levels of subsidies to manage costs.
