Shinkansen seat disputes: Rules for handling occupied reserved seats

Passengers traveling on Shinkansen trains face specific regulations regarding reserved seating. According to JR East passenger business rules, a reserved seat ticket grants the holder the right to use only the specific train, car, and seat number indicated on the ticket.

In cases where another passenger is occupying a reserved seat, travelers are advised not to move to another empty seat of their own volition. Doing so may result in the traveler inadvertently occupying a seat reserved for someone boarding at a later station.

Recommended procedures for resolving seat disputes include first verifying the reservation details (train name, date, car, and seat number) and then politely asking the occupant to check their ticket. If the occupant refuses to move or if the situation becomes difficult to manage, passengers should contact a conductor rather than attempting to resolve the conflict themselves.
