Shinsegae Group to invest $1 billion in Warner Bros. acquisition

Shinsegae Group has announced a $1 billion (approximately 1.4 trillion KRW) investment in the acquisition of Warner Bros. by Paramount Skydance. Shinsegae Property will participate in the deal alongside Skydance Co-CEO David Ellison and the U.S. investment firm RedBird.

The strategic move aims to diversify Shinsegae’s business portfolio from traditional retail into the global content sector. By leveraging intellectual properties (IP) such as ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Game of Thrones’ from Warner Bros., alongside Paramount’s ‘Mission: Impossible’, ‘Star Trek’, and ‘Top Gun’, the group plans to create synergies across its various platforms.

Key integration plans include:

• Theme Parks: Enhancing the competitiveness of the planned ‘Hwaseong Starbay City’ theme park with expanded content options. • Retail Spaces: Transforming Starfield, Starfield Market, and Starfield Village shopping malls into entertainment-focused experiential spaces. • Digital Services: Exploring collaborations with OTT platforms like HBO Max and Paramount Plus, potentially linking them with Shinsegae’s existing membership programs.

In the long term, Shinsegae envisions becoming a leading retail and entertainment platform in Asia, potentially co-producing Korean original content for distribution through global OTT services.
