Shinsegae joins CJ consortium in JoongAng Ilbo acquisition bid

Shinsegae has joined the Daou Kiium and CJ consortium as a strategic investor in the bid to acquire JoongAng Ilbo. The consortium, which has been selected as the preferred bidder, has reportedly proposed an acquisition price in the 500 billion won range.

Unlike CJ, Shinsegae is not seeking management rights but will participate through equity investment. If the acquisition is finalized, Shinsegae is expected to become the third-largest shareholder. The company stated it intends to respect the unique identity and expertise of JoongAng Ilbo while creating synergies by linking its premium cultural platforms and lifestyle content with the media outlet’s assets.

The move carries significant symbolic weight as it involves members of the extended Samsung family. JoongAng Ilbo was founded in 1965 by Samsung founder Lee Byung-chul. CJ Group Chairman Lee Jae-hyun is a grandson of Lee Byung-chul, while Shinsegae Chairwoman Chung Yoo-kyung is a granddaughter. This participation represents a convergence of various branches of the Samsung family lineage in the acquisition of the media company.
