Shinya Tsukamoto to direct film based on Vietnam veteran Allen Nelson's life

Director Shinya Tsukamoto is set to release a film based on the non-fiction account of Allen Nelson, an African American veteran of the Vietnam War. The film explores the brutal realities of combat and the long-term psychological consequences of war.

Nelson joined the U.S. Marine Corps at age 18 to escape poverty and discrimination, undergoing intense training in Okinawa that emphasized absolute obedience and racial dehumanization of the enemy. The narrative follows his experiences in the jungles of Vietnam, where he participated in violent combat and witnessed the devastation of civilian populations.

Upon returning to the United States, Nelson suffered from severe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), characterized by flashbacks and domestic instability. The film depicts his decades-long struggle for recovery, including his interactions with a psychiatrist who repeatedly questioned the morality of his actions. Nelson eventually found a way to confront his past by sharing his experiences through public lectures, a practice he engaged in over 1,200 times in Japan.
