Cyprus‑flagged container ship GFS Galaxy hit in Strait of Hormuz, crew rescued and US strikes Iran

On July 12 the Cyprus‑flagged container vessel GFS Galaxy was struck by Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz near Oman’s coast. The attack caused severe engine‑room damage and a fire, forcing the crew to abandon ship.

All 11 crew members were Indian nationals; ten were rescued by local authorities and one remained missing, later reported dead. India condemned the strike, calling for immediate de‑escalation.

In retaliation, the United States launched a third round of airstrikes, targeting roughly 140 Iranian military sites, including missile‑launch and drone facilities.

Cyprus’ Deputy Ministry of Shipping opened an investigation, confirming no Cypriot citizens were aboard and warning that commercial traffic through the strait faces heightened danger.
