Shipka Freedom Monument renovation sparks public protests in Bulgaria
The renovation of the Shipka Freedom Monument has triggered significant public unrest and protests in Bulgaria. Citizens have expressed concerns that the restoration work might lead to the intentional destruction of the national landmark, drawing comparisons to the removal of the Monument to the Soviet Army in Sofia. Protesters have recently blocked construction equipment due to the removal of stone slabs from the stairs and platform.
Dr. Chavdar Angelov, Director of the Shipka-Buzludzha National Park-Museum, explained that the work is necessary because the monument's dolomite cladding is water-permeable, causing stone degradation due to freeze-thaw cycles. He noted that the northern staircase was dismantled because the underlying earth-and-stone embankment had collapsed. The project, which includes replacing over 380 stone blocks, is expected to be completed by September 2029.
The project has also faced scrutiny regarding transparency and procurement. Critics have pointed to the contractor, Building Comfort Ltd, managed by architect Andrey Todorov, and have called for more clarity on the fate of museum exhibits and personal items belonging to historical figures. Additionally, the Russian Embassy has expressed concern regarding the monument's status.
